He moved from Minnesota to Washington, DC in 1940 where his father pursued his career in law and politics. After high school, he earned his degree in Business Administration at Valparaiso University. He later joined the army, and during his service ran a slideshow for President John F. Kennedy at the Pentagon. He was a natural explorer and visited 48 states, living in 18 states before meeting his lovely wife, Karen Tippets in 1974 and settling in Utah. They met at the Terrace Ballroom in Salt Lake City and were married four months later.

Richard lived for travel and vacations, especially those which allowed him to swim and visit the beach. He also enjoyed puzzles, card games, and watching nearly any sports.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, his sister, Shirley Gehl, and his children Sondra (Kevin) Boren, David (Leslie) Frank, Marla (Chris) Curtis, Julie (Rick) Smith, and Brian (Clint) Frank, 20 Grandchildren, and 14 Great Grandchildren.
