Our dear “Rand” has recently gone on before us to begin his next big adventure. Randall (Rand) Shayne Wangerin left this world a few days after his 50th birthday, on Saturday, June 13th, 2020, while living in St. George, Utah. Rand was born on June 9th, 1970, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Roger and Shirley Wangerin, and was the youngest of five children.

Rand built his career following in the footsteps of his mom in the medical field. Over the past more than 25 years, he worked as a professional Registered Polysomnographic Technician (RPSGT), working in sleep clinics, including at the University of Utah Medical Center, and at the UCLA Medical Center. Rand had also worked previously as a licensed Massage Therapist, certified Medical Assistant, and as a Medical Office Manager.

Rand loved the outdoors, especially the mountains and the ocean. He was an active water sports enthusiast and hiker. Rand also loved Theatre and was very talented in stage design and lighting technologies, winning several awards while attending Dixie College. Also, over the years, Rand completed a number of impressive landscape design and home remodeling projects. His work always reflected his natural quest for detail and perfection.

Rand is survived by his father, Roger Wangerin; his sister, Sandra (Floyd) Holm; and his brothers Steven (June) Wangerin and Robert (Debra) Wangerin; as well as his aunt Afton Andrews and uncle Doug Andrews, and his aunt Diane Sorensen and uncle Jerry Sorensen; his nieces Stephanie Holm, Rebecca Holm, Angelica (James) Black, and Natalie (Sam) Humphries; his nephews Andrew Holm, Nathan (Amanda) Holm, Brandon (Melissa) Frantz, Bryan (Lynn) Wangerin, and Ryan (Michelle) Wangerin; and 13 grand nieces and nephews.

Guestbook

I just found out about Rand and my heart is broken. It has been a while, but I worked with him at the University of Utah Sleep lab. Rand was such a great friend and tech. So full of life and fun and funny. The last year that I was at the U, I was the interim supervisor. Rand missed a few days of work. When he came back, he explained that a spider bit him in a very sensitive place. He then proceeded to show me said spot as proof. I almost fell on the floor laughing so hard because I trusted him. I hope I don't offend you sharing that story, it just shows how special and funny he was. I wish I had kept in touch with him after I left the U and then he moved to California. I hope I am not stirring up hard memories for you. I am just in shock and crying in my car. My condolences to his family.

To the Wangerins and your families, we are so sorry for your loss. Rand was such a fun person to be around, so full of life and laughter. We have so many fond memories of hanging out with him at Steve and June's home, at Lake Powell and more. May your memories bring you all comfort as well at this difficult time. Let us know if there's anything we can do for you.

With sincere condolences and love,
