Harry Douglas Yensen was the fifth child born to Jay Nicholas Yensen and Laura Anne Benthin. He entered this world on July 12, 1923 and left his mortal existence on July 9, 2020 just 3 days short of his 97th birthday. He passed away peacefully after declining health with his daughter Judith by his side, along with two friends Meile and Stephanie. Even though he was the fifth child, he never met his sister Edna, who passed away in the 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic. His brother Carl passed away when he was 15 due to injuries suffered in a fire. He graduated from Granite High School in 1940. He was always proud to be a Granitian. He would always tell everyone as a teenager about the two summers he spent in Wyoming working on an oil field and a cattle ranch. After his graduation from high school, he met June, his sweetheart, companion, and best friend when she asked for a ride to Hill Air Force Base, where they both were working. In the summer of 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served in the South Pacific, servicing airplanes on air craft carriers and then on Okinawa. During the War, he faithlessly corresponded with June, while she served in the Coast Guard. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in January 1946, with the rank of Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class. On May 27, 1946 Harry married his best friend, June in Salt Lake City, Utah. The first few years of their marriage were spent between California and Utah. In 1952 they moved to Idaho where he worked as a jeweler. After waiting for seven long years, they were blessed with their first daughter Ann, and then fourteen months later with their second daughter Judith. After living in Blackfoot Idaho for four years, they moved to Seattle, Washington for a job that didn’t work out. Harry then moved his family to Salt Lake City, Utah where he worked several different jobs until he was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier for the next 27 years.

Harry enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing and golf which he taught to his daughters and grandchildren. Harry also loved watching the women’s athletics through the University of Utah. He had season tickets to their volleyball, basketball and gymnastics. He proudly belonged to the Block U (Spikers) Club and Crimson Craze. He was a strong supporter of Murray High School Spartans women’s sports, becoming their Super Fan in volleyball, softball and basketball. When Harry wasn’t attending sporting events, one of his biggest pleasures was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He delighted in interacting and listening to their many stories and encouraged them to follow their dreams.

Harry is survived by his two daughters Ann (Chris) Dahl and Judith Hitchcock, six grandchildren Mark (Nancie) Dahl, Madelyn Dahl, Patrick (Ashley) Dahl, Michael (Harmony) Hitchcock, Sean (Laura) Hitchcock, and Douglas (Andrea) Hitchcock, and 11 great grandchildren Adam, Rachel, Hannah and Abraham Dahl, Grayson, Ethan, Amelia, Victoria, Abigail, Emmett and Adaline Hitchcock. Harry is preceded in death by his sweetheart June, his parents (Jay and Ann) and four siblings, (June, Mark, Edna, and Carl).

I played softball for Murray High from 2010-2014. Seeing Harry in the bleachers always warmed my heart. He was the sweetest! I send my condolences to your family.

Harry was staple at Murray High School softball games for many years and will be greatly missed by all of the coaches, players, and parents that knew him. RIP Harry and thank you for the years of dedicated support that you gave to all of our teams.

Harry was a wonderful neighbor and friend. He always enjoyed seeing our kids, taking care of his tomato plants, always having some to share as we spoke through the fence. Harry will be missed by all who knew him.
