Garret Harmon Andersen was born on December 19, 2000 in Salt Lake City, Utah to parents Laurie and Jeff Andersen and passed away in his home on September 22, 2020, surrounded by the loving arms of his immediate family.

In August 2001, he suddenly lost all of his voluntary motor skills as a result of an undiagnosed genetic metabolic disease and set out on a journey to bring hope, light and love to all who crossed his path.

Garret loved so many things about his life. He was not able to communicate this verbally, but we knew he understood a great deal more. Garret’s sister Rachel quickly became his best friend and protector. She made him laugh and gave him experiences she was sure he needed. Her friends became his friends. He also was fortunate to have older and wiser siblings in Levi, Saige and Preston, who brought unconditional love and encouragement each and every visit. Garret loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served all those around him faithfully.

Going to school at Jordan Valley was one of the highlights of his life. There, he was able to make his own friends among classmates, teachers, therapists, bus drivers and many volunteers. This group of extraordinary people also became family.

Garret came into a very large extended family of loving grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews. Each had their own relationship and communication with him. He has held and helped to carry many of their deepest successes, fears and secrets as they navigate their own paths.

Garret loved many things but was passionate about a few: Disneyland, NASCAR and Camping. He was able to experience all within the last few months with those he loved most. Garret would share his joy and excitement with a meaningful look and a squeal, especially when plummeting down Splash Mountain, banking the turn and seeing the waterfall on Radiator Springs Racers, or when Jimmie Johnson was moving to take the lead in a race. Contentment reigned when camping at the Spruces or Cascade and his infectious giggle could be heard often.

As his family left here on earth, we are forever grateful and tied to those many doctors, nurses and health care professionals who have helped us make Garret’s life as long and comfortable as possible.

We are especially thankful to his pediatrician since birth, Dr. Katie McElligott, for the loving care she has provided over the past 20 years!

Garret is survived by parents, Laurie and Jeff Andersen, siblings: J. Levi Andersen (Carrie), Saige Glazier (Daniel), Preston Greenwood, Rachel Andersen and nephews Stone, Broc, Porter, Troy, Wyatt and Guy.
